What Does Your Newborn Actually See?

  • Newborns see mostly in black & white at birth
  • They can only focus 20–30cm in front of their face
  • High contrast is easier for their eyes to see & helps them focus
  • This supports eye development, brain growth & longer engagement during play
  • Vision continues to develop over time — babies won't reach 20/20 vision until well over a year old

Founders Young Wonderer

Meet the sisters behind Young Wonderer

Hi! We're Jennifer and Michelle — the twin sisters behind Young Wonderer. Michelle founded the brand after struggling to find high contrast products on the market that were versatile, developmental, and genuinely fun for babies to engage with. She teamed up with her twin sister Jennifer, who illustrates our designs, bringing them to life with personality and purpose.

Together we've built a brand designed to support your baby's development, encourage growth and make playtime more engaging and meaningful.

FAQ

Why black and white? How does it help my baby?

Newborns can only see high contrast at birth — bold black and white patterns are exactly what their developing eyes can detect. Our high-contrast designs stimulate visual pathways, support cognitive development, and encourage focus and engagement from day one. Want to learn more? Click here

How long can I use high contrast with my baby?

High contrast is most impactful in the first 0–6 months when your baby's vision is still developing. From around 3 months, babies begin to see more colour and detail — but high contrast continues to support focus, engagement and sensory play right through to 24 months. Our products are designed to grow with your baby, offering developmental benefits well into toddlerhood.
